Set: N/A
Summary: Not with a bang but a whimper.
Author’s Note: I was listening to Tyler Hilton’s version of the song ‘Missing
You’ and suddenly this popped into my head.
It didn’t feel like the end when he walked out.
It was just a stupid fight, nothing that she didn’t expect them to come back
from; they’d always managed in the past.
When he doesn’t call the next day she doesn’t question it, just calls him a few
choice names under her breath while she’s brushing her teeth in the morning and
again when she’s sipping a glass of wine before going to bed.
She sees him fleetingly at the Metro Court the next day but he keeps his
distance, their tasks separate from each other’s and he makes no move to join
her for lunch like he usually does.
He isn’t at the hospital when she goes to visit John and it’s only when she’s
sat in the rocking chair holding him against her that she lets the tears fall.
She allows herself that moment but there are no signs of it when Patrick stops
in on his way home.
She jokes with him, flirts a little, but it takes too much effort and the fun
isn’t there anymore simply because he isn’t Jax.
By the end of the first week it feels like a dull ache in the pit of her stomach
when she realises that he isn’t going to turn up on her doorstep and they’re not
going to work things out. This is it.
Quietly she packs up the few things in her bedroom that belong to him and places
them in a bag by the door so she doesn’t forget to take them to work the next
day.
When she sinks down onto her bed and stares at the photo on the sideboard of
him, her and the boys it almost breaks her heart to know that the family they
were so close to becoming has been shattered beyond repair.
She always thought that if it didn’t work out between them it would end with a
bang considering just how firey they can both be and she would know that they’d
done all they could. But the whimper that has ended their relationship just
leaves her feeling alone and for the first time since she was a child she sleeps
with the light on.
